Feeding Bottle Nipple Size Guide: Which Flow for Your Baby’s Age?

Choosing the right feeding bottle nipple size is one of the most common questions Bangladeshi parents ask. A nipple that flows too fast can make your baby cough, gulp air and spit up. One that flows too slowly makes feeding long and tiring, and your baby may get fussy or fall asleep before finishing. This guide explains PUR nipple sizes (S, M, L and Variable), which age each one suits, and the signs that it is time to move up.

PUR silicone feeding bottle nipples in S, M and L sizes
PUR silicone nipples in S (slow), M (medium) and L (fast) flow

Quick answer: PUR nipple size by age

PUR nipple size Flow Usual age Good for
S Slow flow 0–3 months (newborn) Newborns, breastfed babies who also take a bottle
M Medium flow 3–6 months Babies who feed well and want a little more milk per suck
L Fast flow 6 months+ Older babies who drink larger feeds quickly
V Variable flow Older babies Thicker feeds; flow changes with how the nipple is turned

Age is only a starting point. Every baby is different, and some babies stay happily on a slow or medium nipple for many months. There is no need to move up just because your baby has reached a certain age.

Signs the flow is too slow

  • A feed regularly takes longer than 20–30 minutes.
  • Your baby sucks very hard, gets frustrated or pulls away from the bottle crying.
  • The nipple collapses or flattens during feeding.
  • Your baby falls asleep from tiredness before finishing a normal amount.

If you see these signs often, try the next size up for a few feeds and watch how your baby responds. Move up one size at a time.

Signs the flow is too fast

  • Coughing, choking or gagging during the feed.
  • Milk leaking from the sides of the mouth.
  • Gulping loudly, then lots of burping, hiccups or spit-up afterwards.
  • The feed is finished in just a few minutes and your baby seems uncomfortable.

If this happens, go back to the slower size. A slower nipple is also helpful for breastfed babies, because it is closer to the effort they make at the breast.

Slim neck or wide neck? Match the nipple to your bottle

PUR nipples come in two neck widths, and a nipple only fits a bottle with the same neck. Check your bottle before you buy replacements:

Not sure which neck you have? Message us on WhatsApp with a photo of your bottle and we will tell you the right nipple.

When to replace a bottle nipple

Even the right size needs replacing. Silicone nipples last longer than rubber ones, but check them before every feed and replace them:

  • Every 2–3 months with regular use.
  • Straight away if you see cracks, tears, thinning, stickiness or swelling.
  • If the hole looks bigger than before or milk pours out when the bottle is turned upside down.
  • If your baby has started biting the nipple with new teeth.

Never cut or widen a nipple hole yourself to make milk flow faster. This can cause choking. Choose the next size instead.

Why PUR nipples are made from silicone

All PUR nipples are made from food-grade silicone. They are nitrosamine-safe, odourless and tasteless, and they keep their shape after repeated washing and boiling. Many PUR nipples also have an anti-hiccup air valve that lets air into the bottle instead of your baby’s tummy.

Frequently asked questions

Which nipple size is best for a newborn?

Start with the slowest flow, size S. It lets your newborn control the milk and reduces coughing and spit-up.

Can I use an M nipple for a newborn?

Usually it is better to start with S. Some strong feeders manage M early, but watch for coughing or milk leaking from the mouth and go back to S if you see it.

My baby is 6 months old. Must I change to L?

No. If your baby is feeding comfortably and finishing feeds in a normal time, you can stay on the current size.

Do PUR nipples fit other brands’ bottles?

They are designed for PUR bottles. Other brands may have different thread sizes, which can cause leaking, so we recommend using PUR nipples with PUR bottles.

Where can I buy original PUR nipples in Bangladesh?

You can order genuine PUR nipples directly from PUR Bangladesh, with cash on delivery anywhere in Bangladesh.
